# Factor

Factor:

- Given a number and using the rules of divisibility, identify a number that will divide into the number being factored.
- Divide the number you are factoring by the number you know can divide into the number.
- The result of you division and the number you divided by are FACTORS, show them as you answer.

# Factor

Verb: Given a number, factoring (or "to factor") is the process of finding 2 or more numbers that multiple together to produce the given number. Given 10, realizing that 2 x 5 = 10 is called factoring. When you realize the fact, you have factored 10. When you are asked to "Factor" in class, you are being asked to demonstrate that you know the factors.

Noun: a number used in the multiplication process that produces a number. Given 2 x 4 = 8, 2 and 4 are called factors.

If some one says "factor," They are asking you to factor given numbers.

To Factor:

- Using the rules of divisibility, identify a number that will divide into the number being factored.
- Divide the number you are factoring by the number you know can divide into the number.
- The result of you division and the number you divided by are FACTORS, show them as you answer.

Example 1: Given 30, realize this can be divided by 10, divide by 10,you get 3. Therefore you could answer are 3 x 10. (There could be more than one right answer ... see the next example.)

Example 2: Given 30, realize this can be divided by 2, divide by 2,you get 15. Therefore you could answer are 2 x 15. (Giving this answer or the answer from example 1 would be valid answers.)

of a multiplication problem.

Example: for 50, one set of factors

would be 2 x 25. )
