For some strange reason, graduation tests want you to prove that you know the expanded form of whole numbers.   Luckily, expanded form is easy.

Any whole number can be created by adding a set of numbers.   Figure out the multiples of 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000, .... that add together to create the number and you have figured out the expanded form of the number.

The following are examples of writing a whole number in expanded form:

Whole Number: Expanded Form:

  • 30 + 5
  • 70 + 8
  • 6000 + 700 + 30 + 4
  • 900 + 20 + 1
